European & Luxury Auto Repair in Sherman Oaks, CA

Jaguar XJ, XK and Classic Jaguar Repair in Sherman Oaks

More than 110 of the Jaguars we have repaired in the past two years were XJ sedans, XK coupes and convertibles, XJS and E-Type cars, with model years from 1970 to 2019. These are the Jaguars most shops turn away. Sherman Oaks Exclusive has worked on them since 1977 at 4601 Van Nuys Blvd, under the same owner the whole time. Call (818) 900-0995 with the year and what the car is doing.

The cars

XJ8, XJR, XJL, Vanden Plas and Super V8, 1998–2019. The aluminum-body X350 and X351 cars and the X308 before them. Our most common Jaguar.

XK8, XKR and XK, 1997–2014. The V8 coupes and convertibles, including the 2007–2014 aluminum XK with adaptive suspension.

XJS, 1983–1995, and E-Type, 1970–1974. Carburetors and fuel injection, points and distributors, rust in fuel tanks, recommissioning after years in a garage.

S-TYPE and X-TYPE, 2000–2007. Fewer of them, but the same V8 and V6 work.

What these Jaguars need

Electrical faults and battery drains. A battery that goes flat overnight on an XJ8 or XK is usually a module that never sleeps, most often in the passenger seat. A dash full of warnings on a 2007–2008 XK is usually an alternator charging low. ABS lights on the XJR trace to the ABS pump or a wheel speed sensor. We measure before we replace. Electrical repair

Oil leaks. On the 1998–2002 V8 cars the valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets and oil pan gasket go together; on the XJL and XJS it is the oil filter housing; on the XK the transmission pan gasket joins in. We clean the engine, confirm each source and fix what is actually leaking.

Coolant leaks. Water pumps, thermostat housings, coolant flanges, heater hoses and heater valves. Older Jaguars often have more than one leak, which is why we pressure test again after the first repair. Cooling system repair

Suspension and steering. Front lower control arms and shock mounts on the XJR, rear control arm bushings and toe links on the XK, height sensors on the XK's adaptive suspension, power steering pumps on the XJ. Suspension services

Brakes. Pads and rotors measured on both axles, brake fluid exchanges, ABS repairs. Brake repair

Classic work. Carburetor rebuilds, fuel tanks and pumps, distributor caps and rotors, clutch hydraulics, differential reseals, tires that have aged out. We have put E-Types back on the road after years of sitting.

Smog and check engine lights. Diagnosed with the Autologic platform (now Opus IVS) on the modern cars; wiring repairs, sensors and the occasional rodent damage on all of them. Computer diagnostics

Repairs from our records

A 1998 Vanden Plas came in leaking oil from three places: valve covers, timing cover and oil pan. We did all three gaskets in one job, with new spark plug tube seals while the covers were off, and sent it home with fresh oil and a dry undertray.

A 2006 XJ8 was towed in losing coolant. The first leak was the throttle heater hose. We replaced it, pressure tested, and found the second one at the water pump and thermostat housing. Both replaced, system refilled and bled, pressure tested a third time: dry.

A 2002 XJR with an ABS light. The ABS pump had failed, so we replaced it, filled and bled the brakes, and then found the front left wheel speed sensor reading intermittently. That went too. One visit, both faults.

A 2002 XJR with a knock from the front end. The front lower arms, shocks and shock mounts were worn, and the engine mounts turned out to be broken as well. We replaced all of it, along with the subframe mounts, aligned the car and road tested it. No knock.

A 1973 E-Type arrived on a tow truck with no spark and no clutch. The ignition had been left half-assembled by someone else; the carburetor needles and floats were clogged; the fuel in the tank had rusted. New tank, filler hose and gaskets, rebuilt carburetor valves, new clutch master and slave cylinders, a resealed differential, one aged tire and an alignment. It drove out.

A 1983 XJS that would not start. The battery was dead, the distributor cap was broken, the throttle body screws were loose and the lower radiator hose was wrapped in duct tape. Battery, cap and rotor, throttle adjustment, a pinched breather hose and a real radiator hose later, it idled correctly and held coolant.

A 2010 XK stuck in park, towed in. The shifter assembly had failed. We fitted a replacement and calibrated it to the car, and the transmission shifts as designed.

What XJ and classic Jaguar owners say about us

“I have a pristine 2001 Jaguar Vanden Plas for which many key components are no longer made. It needed a replacement driveshaft to replace one that was causing significant vibration. Amir and his team were able to source a reconditioned replacement (trust me these are VERY hard to find). If they had failed, I would have had to donate a beloved vehicle to charity. Thanks to Amir it’s back on the road and I am very happy!”

“I was having difficulty finding a shop that could work on my 1987 Jaguar XJ6, and Sherman Oaks Exclusive was the only shop that enthusiastically took the work on. They were clear and knowledgeable when it came to the estimate, and kept in contact with me while work was being performed.”

Questions we get about older Jaguars

Is my XJ8 worth fixing?

Usually. Gaskets, a water pump or a seat module cost a fraction of a newer car, and these cars are well built. We will tell you if a repair is not worth it.

Can you get parts for a 1990s Jaguar?

Yes. We fit original or equivalent-quality parts, and for older cars we source good used units when that is the sensible choice; we tell you which is which.

Do you do full recommissioning on an E-Type or XJS?

Yes. Fuel system, ignition, cooling, brakes, clutch and tires, in the order the car needs them, with an estimate before each stage.

Is the work warrantied?

Repairs are backed by our 1-year / 12,000-mile warranty on parts and labor. Customer-supplied parts are the exception.
